Letters, Sounds and Words is a 10-week program that targets children from Senior Kindergarten to Grade 2 who need a literacy boost. They are paired with trained community volunteers who go into schools to work one-on-one with them, playing carefully designed games and activities. The program is organized in four strands that help children learn the names of the letters, the sounds they make, how to blend sounds together to build words, and how to decode and read words. The Letters, Sounds and Words program is available in multiple communities in Ontario.Volunteer Coaches work with one child at a time, once a week, for 1/2 hour. They follow perscribed activities using the materials provided. A vulnerable sector police record check is required to work in a school.
