On Saturday, October 24, The Royal Canadian Legion officially begins the 2026 National Poppy Campaign across Canada. Moving forward, October 24 marks a permanent annual launch date for the campaign, which runs through November 11. Across Oshawa and throughout Canada, millions of residents will wear a red poppy to honour those who served, but the effort relies directly on thousands of grassroots volunteers who coordinate distribution and collection tables in our neighbourhoods.
First adopted in Canada in 1921, the poppy remains a central symbol of Remembrance. Behind the displays in storefronts, community centres, and transit hubs is a large civic network.
How the Campaign Works in 2026
This year’s campaign pairs longstanding traditions with convenient ways to contribute:
- Digital & Tap Donations: In addition to traditional coin boxes, over 2,000 RBC "Pay Tribute" tap-enabled boxes are placed across Canada, allowing quick $5 donations by tapping a debit card, credit card, or digital wallet. New fundraising technology will also roll out on launch day.
- Local Retail Partners: National partners including TD Canada Trust, Starbucks, Walmart, Giant Tiger, Home Depot, Bulk Barn, and Canada Post—host poppy boxes and collect donations at checkout counters.
- Doorstep Access: For residents who cannot easily reach a physical branch or retail counter, the Legion’s Amazon Canada storefront provides biodegradable poppies by mail, with 100% of proceeds supporting the Poppy Trust Fund.
Donations Stay in Local Communities
Nationally, the Poppy Campaign raises close to $20 million each year. A critical rule of the campaign is that all funds collected locally remain in trust at the branch level. Donations gathered across Oshawa directly support Canadian Armed Forces veterans and their families in our area.
